Knowing More About Transitions Lenses

Transitions lenses are eyeglass lenses that are clear indoors and darken automatically when exposed to UV light. They are also known as photochromic lenses, light-adaptive lenses or variable tint lenses.

The molecules responsible for causing transitions lenses to darken are activated by the sun’s ultraviolet radiation (UV). These UV rays penetrate clouds, photochromic lenses will darken on overcast days as well as sunny days.

Transitions lenses typically will not darken inside a vehicle because of the windshield glass. The windshield glass blocks most UV rays. With advance technology, it also allow some transitions lenses to activate with both UV ray and visible light, providing some darkening on the lenses behind the windshield. Ask your Singapore Optometrist or Optician for details.

Transitions lenses are available in nearly all lens materials and designs, including high-index lenses, specialty lenses and progressive lenses. An added benefit of transitions lenses is that they protect your eyes from 100 percent of the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays.

A person’s lifetime exposure to sunlight and UV radiation has been associated with cataracts later in life, it is a good idea to consider transitions lenses for children’s eyewear as well as for eyeglasses for adults. A lens material called Polycarbonate is the safest for kids as it provides up to 10 times of impact resistance compared to other lens materials.

Transitions lenses also come with anti-reflective (AR) coating which enhances the performance of the lenses even further. AR coating allows more light to pass through transitions lenses for sharper vision in low-light conditions such as driving at night, unwanted reflections of sunlight and other light from the back part of the lenses in bright conditions. Though transitions lenses cost more than clear eyeglass lenses, as a eye care health solution, they offer the convenience of reducing the need to carry a pair of prescriptive sunglasses with you everywhere you go.
