RGP Lenses (Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses)

What Are RGP Lenses?

RGP lenses — short for rigid gas permeable lenses — are firm, custom-fitted contact lenses that hold a precise shape on the eye while letting oxygen pass freely through to the cornea. You may also see them called rigid gas permeable lenses, gas perm lenses, or simply “hard” contact lenses, though today’s breathable RGP materials are very different from the rigid lenses of decades past. Because an RGP lens keeps its own shape rather than draping over the eye like a soft lens, it creates a smooth, even optical surface that can give a level of clarity many wearers find hard to match with soft lenses.

Every RGP lens is made to measure. Rather than being picked off a shelf, it is designed around precise measurements of your cornea — its curvature, diameter and surface shape — so the fit is unique to your eyes.

How RGP Lenses Differ From Soft Contact Lenses

The key difference is rigidity: an RGP lens keeps its own shape, while a soft lens conforms to the surface of your eye. That single property leads to several practical differences:

  • Crisper, more stable vision. The firm surface masks small irregularities in the cornea, which is why RGP lenses are often well suited to astigmatism and stronger prescriptions.
  • High oxygen transmission. Gas-permeable materials allow oxygen to reach the cornea directly, supporting eye health during wear.
  • Durability. A well-cared-for RGP lens is replaced far less often than disposable soft lenses, typically lasting one to two years.
  • A short adaptation period. Because the lens is firm, most people are aware of it for the first week or two before it begins to feel comfortable and natural.

This trade-off — a brief settling-in period in exchange for sharp, stable, long-lasting vision — is what leads many people to choose RGP lenses for everyday wear. A comprehensive eye examination is the starting point for deciding whether they suit you.

Who RGP Lenses Are Suitable For

RGP lenses suit people who want clear, dependable daytime vision — and they are especially valuable when soft lenses don’t give a sharp enough result. They are often recommended for:

  • Astigmatism, where the cornea has an uneven shape that soft lenses may not fully correct.
  • Higher or more complex prescriptions that are difficult to fit comfortably with soft lenses.
  • Irregular corneas, including conditions such as keratoconus, where a rigid surface can provide clearer vision than glasses alone.
  • Wearers who prioritise the crispest possible vision and don’t mind a short adaptation period.
  • People who find soft lenses dry or uncomfortable by the end of the day — though if dryness is your main concern, our optometrists can talk you through contact lens options for dry eyes as part of your fitting.

Whether RGP lenses are right for you depends on your prescription, the health of your eyes and your daily routine — which is why every fitting begins with a full assessment rather than an assumption.

The Importance of an Expert RGP Fitting

Because every RGP lens is custom-made, the fitting is where the result is won or lost. A lens that sits even slightly incorrectly can affect both comfort and vision, so fitting RGP lenses calls for specialised instruments, training and hands-on experience. At EMME Visioncare, your assessment is carried out in-house and led by Jaycob Chin, FIAOMC, our optometrist, using digital corneal mapping to design lenses around the precise shape of your eyes.

A proper RGP fitting is a process, not a single visit. After the initial design, follow-up appointments check how the lenses sit, how your eyes are responding, and how clear and comfortable your vision is, with fine adjustments made along the way. This continuing care is central to wearing RGP lenses safely and getting the most from them.

RGP Lenses, Ortho-K and Specialty Lenses

RGP technology also underpins two specialised treatments we provide — overnight Ortho-K and lenses for irregular corneas. Ortho-K (orthokeratology) uses custom rigid lenses worn only while you sleep to gently reshape the cornea, so you can see clearly during the day with no lenses in — a popular option for adults and for slowing the progression of short-sightedness in children. For irregularly shaped corneas, rigid and specialty lenses can deliver clear, comfortable vision where glasses and soft lenses fall short.

If you’re not sure which type of lens fits your needs, the simplest next step is a conversation with our team alongside a full eye assessment — we’ll walk you through the full range of contact lens options and recommend the approach best matched to your eyes.

Caring for Your RGP Lenses

Good habits keep RGP lenses clear, comfortable and safe to wear. Clean and store your lenses only in the solutions your optometrist recommends, never rinse them with tap water, and always wash and dry your hands before handling them. Handled with care, a pair of RGP lenses can serve you well for a year or more. Your optometrist will take you through the full handling and cleaning routine at your fitting and check in on it at every follow-up.
