Everything You Need To Know About Blue Light

Turning on a wall switch indoors, using your computer, phones or other digital devices: All these things result in your eyes being exposed to a variety of invisible blue light.

 

Blue Light belongs to the portion of visible light spectrum with the shortest wavelength and highest energy. Here are a few things you should know about blue light:

 

1) Blue Light Is Around You

 

We spend most of our time indoors, in front of the computer display screens, smartphones and other digital devices emit significant amounts of blue light. The amount of blue light is only a fraction of what is emitted by the sun. However, the number of hours we spend using these devices in close distances to the user’s face is a major concern about possible long-term effects of blue light on eye health.

 

2) The Eye Is Not A Very Good Blue Light Filter

 

Our eye has structures that are very effective at blocking UV rays from reaching the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eyeball. It is highly recommended to wear sunglasses for UV protection.
Though the eye structures are blocking the much damaging UV rays, prolonged exposure will lead to cataracts, photokeratitis (sunburn eyes), pinguecula and/or pterygium and even cancer.

On the other hand, visible blue light passes through all the eye structures and reaches the retina.

 

3) Prolonged Blue Light Exposure May Increase The Risk Of Macular Degeneration

 

With the fact that blue light penetrates all the way to the retina, researchers have shown too much exposure to blue light can damage the retina.The damaged retina caused by blue light is similar to those of macular degeneration, which can lead to permanent vision loss.

Although more research is needed to determine how much blue light is “too much blue light” for the retina. Many eye care providers are concerned that the prolonged blue light exposure from computer screens, smartphones and other digital devices might increase a person’s risk of macular degeneration later in life.  

 

4) Digital Eye Strain Caused By Blue Light

 

The high energy from blue light scatters and is not easily focused. When you are looking at your digital devices that emit significant amount of blue light, this unfocused “noise” reduces contrast and contribute to digital eye strain.
It has been proven that prescription lenses that block blue light with wavelengths less than 450nm increase contrast significantly. Thus, with blue cut lenses, it can increase your comfort when viewing digital devices for extended periods of time.

 

5) Blue Cut Lenses May Be Much Needed After Cataract Surgery

 

The natural lens in our eye blocks almost all the sun’s UV rays. As part of natural aging process, the natural lens in the eye becomes opaque and require surgery to replace it with an artificial lens.
