MASUNAGA Eyewear
The Epicenter of Eyewear Production
Japan is the beating heart of the global eyewear industry. Alongside China and Italy, Fukui stands tall as one of the world's top three production regions for optical frames. In fact, an astonishing 97% of Japanese-made optical frames are meticulously crafted in Fukui.
Pioneering Excellence Since 1905
Masunaga begins over a century ago in 1905 when their visionary founder, Gozaemon Masunaga, brought his dream to life in Fukui. The road to excellence was challenging, and initially, Fukui-made eyeglasses were considered third-rate. But Gozaemon had a bold vision.
Building a Legacy
In pursuit of unmatched quality, Gozaemon established a unique guild-like system that empowered skilled craftsmen from Osaka and Tokyo to build their own businesses. This transformative approach gradually increased the ranks of eyeglass craftsmen, spreading the light of the optical industry across Fukui.
The Art of Crafting Excellence
Crafting an optical frame is a meticulous process, involving as many as 200 manual steps. While it's true that productivity can suffer when one company oversees all processes, Masunaga defies convention.
Integrated Excellence
Masunaga proudly stand as the only company in Japan with an integrated production system, from raw materials to production and finish. This seamless approach enhances precision and quality. For example, when developing a new model, we build our molds in-house. Any comfort concerns that arise after a pair of glasses is complete are promptly addressed in previous stages.
Masunaga’s Timeless Mission
Their mission statement, unwavering since the beginning: "We manufacture excellent eyeglasses. We want to make a profit if we can, but we don't hesitate to take a loss. It is always in our thoughts to manufacture excellent eyeglasses."
