General Eye Examination
What is 6/6 vision?

An eye chart measures visual acuity, which is the clarity or sharpness of vision. The top number refers to your distance in feet from the chart. The bottom number indicates the distance at which a person with normal eyesight can read the same line. 6/6  means that the person can clearly see a certain letter on the standard eye chart (equivalent to what a person with normal vision should be able to see at 6 metres).

What does it mean if I see less than 6/6?

If a person sees 6/12 at 6 meters, it means that the person requires 2 times the distance as compared to a person who sees 6/6. However, it does not necessarily mean a person who sees 6/12 has lost 50% of their visual ability.

Do you need an Eye Exam?

The Optometrists and Opticians Board recommends that children receive a complete vision exam at young age. It is particularly important that your child have a complete evaluation every 6 months prior to entry into Kindergarten. While in school, yearly evaluations are recommended.

Ideally, one eye exam per year is recommend for optimum eye health, but some people should schedule an exam more than once a year. Vision can change quite a bit over the course of a year, especially for those over the age of 50, and it is important to know when you need to schedule an exam.

Here are a few signs that are telling you it's time for an eye exam.

  1. Your eyes are red, dry, itchy, or you are seeing spots, flashes of light, or floaters.

  2. You can't remember when you last had an eye exam.

  3. You have difficulty driving at night and seeing street signs in the dark.

  4. You experience eye strain, headaches and/or blurred vision after spending an extended amount of time in front of a computer screen.

  5. You get motion sick, dizzy, or have trouble following a moving target.

  6. You hold books or the newspaper further away from your face and squint or close one eye to read them clearly.

  7. You notice any changes in your vision, especially after an incident of head trauma.

There's so much more to healthy vision than 6/6!

Our comprehensive vision exam goes beyond 6/6, evaluating other conditions that are just as important.

  •  We use digital testing to examine your eyes. These tests are crucial in diagnosing a disease in its early stages and allows the Optometrist to detect abnormalities in the back of the eye, on the eye's surface or inside the eye.

In children:
  • We test visual acuity at near to determine if your child has clear sight at short distances critical to reading and computer use.

  • We check eyeteaming, focusing, and movement skills:

    • Do the two eyes aim as a coordinated team?

    • Are they capable of rapidly focusing at varying distances?

    • If they cannot, your child may have difficulty or limiting potential in various sporting and athletic activities.

    • Your child may struggle when changing focus from the chalkboard to the desk, and we thoroughly test these skills with each visit.

Vision exams for adults
The Optometrists and Opticians Board recommends a yearly eye exam for adults. Routine eye exams are very important to monitor the health of your eyes, as well as to determine your need for corrective lenses.

Some eye diseases, such as glaucoma, have no early warning signs and can only be detected with a thorough eye exam.

21st century lifestyles demand more from our vision than ever before. Now more than ever, adults are spending more time on computers. This causes tremendous stress on the visual system and can sometimes induce headaches and/or visual difficulties. With a thorough eye examination these conditions can be effectively treated with therapeutic lenses.

At EMME Visioncare, we are equipped with the latest technology in diagnostic and examination equipment. This allows us to provide our patients with the most thorough, comprehensive eye examinations available.

So often we find that patients are "turned off" by the impersonal nature of health care today. In our office, we still believe that each individual patient counts. That's why the staffs will take the time to listen, and provide the best solutions to your individual vision and eye care needs.
